Pussy Riot are feminist, critical of the government and the church and belong to the Riot Grrrl Movement. The punk rock band from Moscow consists of about ten young women who see themselves as a female, autonomous collective that does not charge any fees or entrance fees for their shows. The videos of their actions are uploaded on the internet for free. Their performances mostly take place in public places, such as metro stations or on bus roofs. During their actions, they wear balaclavas and light, garish clothing. Wearing balaclavas conceals their conviction that they want to act away from any cult of personality - especially in relation to female faces and bodies. Their performances in public places are always illegal. Their action in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour led to their arrest in 2012. The arrest triggered numerous debates in the Russian and international media about art, religion and politics.
